how do you set your settings as to not to subscribe to a thread just because you post in it?

At the top of the page click on My Account then click on Edit Options. Then you should find a section titled Default Thread Subscription Mode. In the drop down menu you can choose Do not subscribe. Then click the Save Changes button at the bottom.
